So the manufacturers jack up the colours and contrast to grab your eye.”

To bring your HDTV’s picture down to something that looks good at home, “go into the video settings menu, and select either the standard setting, or one of the less bright configurations that look good to your eyes,” says John Mossop, owner of The Audio Centre in Ottawa.
